Maldives Contingent for Youth Olympics departed from Male’ on the 13th of August 2013 at 20:45 hours to compete at the 2nd Youth Olympic Games.
The 2nd Youth Olympics is scheduled to be held from 16th till 25th of August at Nanjing/China. A total of 03 athletes and officials will be participating in this Game from two different sports. The 2 sports are Swimming and Athletics.
For the very first time in the history of Maldives, a Maldivian Swimmer was qualified for the tournament. Mohamed Muthasim Adnan was qualified with his personal best record by reaching the qualification standard where he was accompanied by Aishath Sajina who will also compete in the Swimming event. In addition, the recent Colors Awards winner Hussain Shahudhaan Fahym will compete in the games from athletics.
The Chef De Mission of the Maldives Contingent is the President of Maldives Table Tennis Association Mr. Ahmed Latheef. Swimming athlete Mohamed Muthasim Adnan was selected to lead the 2014 Maldives Youth Olympic Team into Saturday’s Opening Ceremony as flag bearer. Muthasim was the first athlete from Maldives to ever qualify for the Youth Olympic Games.
Muthasim is the second Youth Olympian to serve as Opening Ceremony flag bearer for Team Maldives. Aishath Afnaan Rasheed carried the flag at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010 that was held in Singapore from 14th to 26th August.
The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games will feature 3,800 athletes from 204 nations. The 13 day competition for athletes between the ages of 15 and 18 will include all 28 sports on the program for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
