The 2nd session of the program, Chat with Champions was held yesterday on the 1st of June 2015 at Hiriya School. Chat with champions is one of the Sub programs under Get Set Go program which is funded by the Olympic Solidarity.
At yesterday’s session, students were given the opportunity to participate and interact with Mayan Mohamed and Aminath Haleem.
Mayan Mohamed is a former athlete, who had competed at various tournaments as part of our National squad. Netball, Basketball and Football are among the sports that Mayan had competed at a professional level. Based on student’s questions, Mayan told that being born to a sports family was the beginning of her sports career. From the age of 10 she has been involved in women sports, despite the difficulties and challenges. Regardless of the obstacles during those days, Mayan highlighted that the Maldivian Society’s perception towards women involvement in sports has been gradually changing. People are accepting this today. This is due to the hard work and commitment former role models have put in to the development of women in sports, Mayan quoted.
At yesterday’s session Students were also able to listen and be inspired by the stories shared by Aminath Haleem (Dhil). Dhil is a former national athletes (captain) from Netball, who is now a coach and official. Dhil also have received an award of recognition from the government for her services in the sporting Industry. According to Aminath Haleem, our youngsters have a promising future in the field of sports. This industry may lead to injuries and devastation from losing to opponents. However, we can recover faster and always target for victory in the next games. She also quoted that, sports figures, mostly because they are active, are better at managing time. Apart from this she also highlighted that, team mates are friends made for life, as they are the biggest inspiration and motivation to move forward in the sporting industry.
Before concluding the session, Mayan and Dhil advised the girls to be involved in sports, at any level, as it is really important to maintain fitness
