In the press conference held today at MOC, the secretary General, Marzooq congratulated Ahmed Abdul Gafoor “Gabbe” and Adam Faisal for being selected to participate in the TOPCAT World Sailing Championship. TOPCAT World Sailing Championship will be held in Croatia, from 27th August to 2nd October 2016.
In Marzooq’s statement he highlighted that this is the 1st time a Maldivian was invited to participate in the world sailing championship. Although it requires qualifying for the event, Maldives was given one allotment among the 04 allotments that was allocated. Marzooq also stated that the decision to select Gabbe for the championship was not made by MOC. It was a decision finalized by the TOPCAT and since the Sailing association of Maldives did not have international affiliation, it was requested by TOPCAT to make arrangements by the MOC.
In response to this request, MOC has made arrangements for Gabbe and his partner Adam to practice for the event, in Olhuveli Island Resort. This opportunity was facilitated for the sailors by Sun Travel Maldives. On behalf of MOC and the sporting community of Maldives Marzooq expressed appreciation for the management team of Sun Travel for providing this valuable opportunity.
At the press, Marzooq further mentioned that, MOC is working to get a qualified international coach to assist Gabbe and Adam to prepare for the sailing championship. He also noted that, rather than just participating, the aim is to compete at the event, and attain some form of an achievement. Marzooq assured that he is confident in Gabbe and Adam that they will show their full potential and make us proud at the sailing championship.
Before concluding his statement Marzooq noted that this is a huge opportunity to promote tourism, and noted that meetings are being scheduled with the tourism board to discuss this opportunity.
