Maldives national swimmer Aminath Shajan has been chosen as the flag bearer of the Maldivian contingent at the Rio Olympics opening ceremony on August 5. The function to award the flag bearer was held at the VIP lounge of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport on the 27th of July, which was attended by the Sports minister Mrs Iruthisham Adam.
The Swimming Association of Maldives expressed their delight for the selection of a swimmer as the flag bearer of an Olympic Games. With her participation at Rio Olympics, the 21 year old swimmer will be making her second Olympic appearance this year.
Winner of numerous medals at regional competitions including a bronze medal at South Asia Games, Shajan is also one of the promising athletes who currently hold the national record of 100,200 and 400 m freestyle. Shajan will compete in the 100 meter freestyle event at the Rio Olympics 2016.
